Children and youth in care of the Frontenac Children's Aid Society face enormous obstacles every day of their lives. The Children's Fund has been established to help improve the quality of life for these brave young people by providing them with enriching opportunities not covered by the Society or government programs.
The Board of Directors of the Frontenac Children's Aid Society has selected and approved three causes as fund raising priorities. All selected causes benefit vulnerable clientele target groups, and are consistent with the Society's message promoting Safety Comfort and Hope.
Sports and Recreation Program supports vulnerable at risk children and youth (ages 2-16) living in Frontenac County by providing them with a positive sport and recreational summer activity to help them increase their social skills and self-esteem.
Due to the increase in the children at risk population, there is a continued need to consider continuing this worthwhile program. Recreation plays a major role in the lives of children. Recreation and sport activities increase a child's competence, social skills, and nurture transferable skills that are essential for their development.
When a child's parent or guardian neglects to or is unable to provide the child's basic needs and safety, the Frontenac Children's Aid Society removes the child from their home and places the child in a safer environment. Often these children leave their homes with just the clothes on their back and a few belongings.
Project Comfort was established to support these children coming into foster care by providing them with a personalized duffle bag filled with brand new items that they call their own. A flashlight and a soft toy are just a few of the items that can offer comfort during this extremely difficult time. The bags are custom designed, age and gender appropriate. Because of the number of children coming into the care of the Society, the supply of comfort bags and their contents is depleted.
The Youth In Care Bursary / Life Skills Program was established to provide financial assistance to current and former Crown Wards of the Frontenac Children's Aid Society pursuing post secondary education and or a life skill / apprenticeship opportunity.
The number of current and former Crown Wards continues to increase each year. This population is exposed to different risks due to: limited access to jobs, apprenticeship opportunities, access to housing, and having limited funds to pursue their education. Without families to rely on and no longer in the care of the Society these young people must support themselves through part time work and student loans.
In 2006 we anticipate that ten youth will need academic support as they leave the care of our agency. By investing in their education or providing them a working opportunity we give them the extra support they need to assist them in becoming self-sufficient, productive members of our community and the opportunity to lead successful lives.
Eligible youth will have demonstrated considerable efforts to achieve their personal and academic goals, display a commitment to bettering themselves and have been accepted into a college program and or life skills opportunity that is consistent with their chosen career plans are considered for selection.
Youth are recommended by their social workers. A profile outlining the challenges and accomplishments of the youth and a rationale of why they deserve support is submitted by the worker to the selection team including a Board of Directors member, an In Care representative and the Director of Services. The selection team makes the decision for the Bursary awards given each year.
By investing in these initiatives you are helping children and youth living in Kingston and area develop self-esteem, confidence and relationships and give them a reason to believe again.
